O'Grady lived in Wheaton, Illinois she graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the child of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Prior to moving from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. O'Grady made her debut in the industry by modelling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She played a role in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later a regular role in the ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she guest-starred on a number of other shows and appeared in made for films and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first lead role in ABC's NYPD Blue, a police drama. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the unit from 1993 to 1996. Her nomination was for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama series for each year.
