O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. She advanced to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performance. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots in both cases. They were stunned by the decision and proclaimed to the public that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil's performance was consistent that he never fell into the top 3. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil was able to advance to the top two spots in the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
